This was the first of my randomised video experiments. It is produced with a custom-scripted DVD.
Dark Dancer is a performance dance piece. Two bodies move through space and in and out of a beam of light. Patterns of predictability are challenged – the next location, the next gesture. Genders blur.
The video is dynamically produced when it is inserted into a DVD player – each movement is a short clip, and the scripting randomly selects and plays the clips in an infinite sequence. The dance is, therefore, truly unpredictable: the machine is choreographer, the dancers are its puppets.
This sample video below is a composite of 100 randomly chosen clips, and simulates the experience of the DVD.
Dark Dancer debuted at ZAAT Media Festival, Lisbon, September 2010.
